Excerpt

I cradled my drink as Cam sauntered back to the pool tables. My mind wasn’t made up on the whole visiting them thing yet. Maybe I would. Maybe I wouldn’t.
“Want another rum and coke?”
My lips curled up at the sound of Nick’s rich, deep voice. We’d been chatting on and off since I plopped my butt down on the stool, and he had seemed happy that I was there.
Total bonus points lottery with this guy.
“I’m good, but thanks.” The last thing I wanted to be was drunk. I smiled at him, pleased when his heavily hooded gaze dipped again. “Are you guys usually this busy on the weekend?”
I could see that small talk was something Nick excelled at, which made sense, considering his occupation. He was an equal opportunity charmer. Women flocked to him at the bar. The other bartender, the girl with the pink glasses, seemed to take it all in stride.
“Not sure if you really call this busy, but Saturdays usually bring a larger crowd.” He glanced down the bar before continuing. “So you went to school with them?” he asked, jerking his chin in the direction Cam had roamed off to.
“Yeah.” Leaning forward, I placed my elbows on the bar. “I had no idea they had connections here. Total surprise.”
“Small world,” he said, echoing my earlier thought. “But you’re not very close with them.”
It was a statement, not a question. “What makes you think that?”
“Well, if you were, I guess you’d be over there with them. Or …”
Nick was observant. “Or what?”
One side of his lips curled up as he folded his arms across his chest. The movement drew my attention. I was such a visual creature. Not that anyone would blame me right now. The black shirt he wore stretched around well-defined biceps. “Or you’d rather spend the time with me.”
The twisty motion in my belly cranked up a notch. “Am I that transparent?”
“In the best possible way.” He picked up a bottle. “I’m glad you did stop by. Every time the door opened last night, I looked up and hoped it was you.”
“Is that so?”
“I speak the truth.” His smile was lazy. “Did you finish unpacking?”
“Yep.”
“Were there any more rat bastard combinations?”
I laughed. “There were a few more.”
“Kind of mad I missed out on them.”
“There’s always later.” I toyed with my glass as I met and held his stare. “So, Nick, do you have a last name?”
“Blanco,” he replied after a brief hesitation. “Do you?”
“Keith.” I grinned as he unfolded those arms. “I have another question for you.”
Moving in, he placed his hands on the bar. “Ask away.”
“Do you have a girlfriend?” My breath caught a little when he leaned in suddenly. Our mouths were close enough that we were breathing the same tiny patch of oxygen. “Or a boyfriend?”
Nick didn’t bat an eyelash. “Nope to both. How about you?”
Bonus points explosion!
“None,” I said, welcoming the tingle that swirled down my spine as his breath warmed my lips.
He tilted his head to the side, lining up his mouth with mine with just a fraction of an inch between us. I started to feel a little flushed. “You have plans tonight, Stephanie Keith?” he asked, voice deeper and rougher.
I shook my head as my pulse tripped all over itself in a happy little dance.
Nick’s grin spread into the kind of smile I knew left a trail of women in its wake. “You do now.”

Book Review: Every Last Breath by Jennifer L. Armentrout

9:00 AM Vi Win Win 0 Comments

Some loves will last ’til your dying breath

Every choice has consequences—but seventeen-year-old Layla faces tougher choices than most. Light or darkness. Wickedly sexy demon prince Roth, or Zayne, the gorgeous, protective Warden she never thought could be hers. Hardest of all, Layla has to decide which side of herself to trust.

Layla has a new problem, too. A Lilin—the deadliest of demons—has been unleashed, wreaking havoc on those around her…including her best friend. To keep Sam from a fate much, much worse than death, Layla must strike a deal with the enemy while saving her city—and her race—from destruction.

Torn between two worlds and two different boys, Layla has no certainties, least of all survival, especially when an old bargain comes back to haunt them all. But sometimes, when secrets are everywhere and the truth seems unknowable, you have to listen to your heart, pick a side—and then fight like hell…

Goodreads | Amazon

The ending of a series is always bittersweet. As always, I flew through yet another of Jen’s books and it’s safe to say the woman hasn’t quite lost her touch. When she wants you to feel something, dammit, she’s gonna make you feel it. Emotions ran high and all the feels were brought out while reading this. In true JLA fashion, she brings plenty of humor, snark, surprises, and action into Every Last Breath and you can’t help feeling a wave of satisfaction of a book well read and written after reading one of her books.

Layla was easily the star of the show here and her being on the cover fits perfectly with how the story went. This was definitely her book. She grows a lot in this book, understanding who and what she is, making life-changing choices, learning some cold, hard truths, and making sacrifices for the greater good. I really loved her in this book and despite my minor issue with her choice of lovers, I still heart the girl with a passion. She felt more mature to me in this book, making those choices and sticking to them. Being in her head was nice because you could see where her mindset was during each of these events, how strong her emotions were during those good times, but also how much pain she felt when those inevitable bad moments happened. I connected to her a lot more in this book and that helped make my reading experience so much more enjoyable.

FYI: This is next part about who Layla chooses is only partly spoilerish if you follow me on social media and know which team I’m on. No names are mentioned though. You’ve been warned.

As for Layla’s choice, the winner was obvious. I don’t know if Jen had always planned it this way, but the way she wrote it and how the book spoke to me, it just seems like this was always going to be the case. I understood it. I’m reasonable and can clearly see who is the better choice. Am I happy about it, though? Not so much. Don’t get me wrong. The winner was exceptional in this book and surprised me with how passionate, caring, considerate, and sweet he truly is. When this guy falls, he falls hard and makes sure the one on the receiving end knows how much he loves her. There were definitely a few swoonworthy moments that could’ve swayed me had I not been so invested in the other guy. The things he said could make any girl melt and it would definitely be hard to resist if he focused that energy on me. I’m getting butterflies just thinking of some of the things he said and did.

With that said though because I was rooting for the other guy, I knew once Layla made her choice, it would take away from my connection to their relationship, and it ultimately did. It’s kind of like how I felt with Will and Tessa from The Infernal Devices. I was so wholeheartedly on Team Jem, that despite the awesomeness that is Will Herondale, I couldn’t fully invest in their romance. I respected and appreciated it, but I didn’t love it. The same thing happened here. While I fully believe Layla made the right choice and that guy can charm the pants off me any old day, my heart still yearned and ached for the other guy. I have to also mention that while Clare gave fans what I believe was a generous ending to that love triangle, JLA broke my heart with how she flipped his character once he was rejected. I couldn’t accept the way he acted and how devoid the book was of him. Yes, the book needed to focus on the couple, but it was like “wham, bam, thank you ma’am” and then he’s gone, never to appear again except for those fleeting moments where he’s basically a stranger, but necessary to aid in stopping the Lilin. I feel like we didn’t get enough of a resolution, at least on his side, of their romance for me to truly be happy with how it all went down. It’s like each guy did a total 360, the Chosen One turning into this romantic, irresistible (and sometimes mushy) one and The Loser turning into this closed off, prickly jerk. If anyone watches The Bachelorette (I’ve recently become obsessed with the show), I totally felt like The Loser pulled “a Nick” and that kind of turned me off from him, which in turn made me mad, because I didn’t want to feel that way about him.

It’s because of this that while reading it I felt a little off and whenever those sweet, romantic scenes with Layla and her Chosen One came up, I smiled, but it didn’t reach my eyes. My heart fluttered, but it didn’t skip a beat. The effect was just dulled.

That’s my take on that, so anyways…

Some secondary characters that need to be mentioned here are the familiars aka the tattoos. I loved them all. Thumper makes a grand entrance and Bambi shines as my favorite of them all. We also meet a new one named Robin who wasn’t bad. These tattoos need like their own featurette or novella where we see them getting into trouble or just having fun. I also really liked Dez, Jasmine, and Danika. Cayman wasn’t bad either, although the absurdness of his words and mannerisms was over the top at times and it often made me cringe with awkwardness. I’ll refer to my thoughts on Fall With Me, where I wonder if people truly talk like that nowadays or is just for the laugh factor?

Every Last Breath was some of Jen’s best work to date in terms of the world she created and how the story flowed. The pacing was on point, mixing action-packed scenes, romantic moments, and key plot points together in a seamless way that made it difficult to stop reading. She took the whole Heaven and Hell/Angels and Demons thing apart and put it back together in her own wickedly unique way making it one of the better books I’ve read with the theme. If you’ve been waiting impatiently to see how it all ends, you won’t be disappointed. Jen packs a wallop of a punch and pulls out all the stops to give you one heck of an ending.

Book Review: Scorched by Jennifer L. Armentrout

9:00 AM Vi Win Win 0 Comments

Sometimes life leaves a mark…

Most days, Andrea doesn’t know whether she wants to kiss Tanner or punch him in the gut. He is seriously hot, with legit bedroom eyes and that firefighter body of his, but he’s a major player, and they can’t get along for more than a handful of minutes. Until now.

Tanner knows he and Andrea have had an epic love/hate relationship for as long as he can remember, but he wants more love than hate from her. He wants her. Now. Tomorrow. But the more he gets to know her, the more it becomes obvious that Andrea has a problem. She’s teetering on the edge and every time he tries to catch her, she slips through his fingers.

Andrea’s life is spiraling out of control, and it doesn’t matter that Tanner wants to save her, because when everything falls apart and she’s speeding toward rock bottom, only she can save herself.

Sometimes life makes you work for that happily ever after…

Goodreads | Amazon

I’d have to say that Scorched is one of the most realistic and poignant books that Jen has written to date. Andrea’s story is something that I know a lot of readers will be able to relate to, either fully or in one way or another. The book itself isn’t filled with a dramatic roller coaster, but rather an inner roller coaster of thoughts and emotions. It’s through Andrea’s relationship with Tanner, her being able to open up to the possibility of love, that she comes to terms with her issues and decides whether or not she’s going to take control or let it continue to control her. Andrea is such a strong character and handled her situation in a very admirable way.

As for the romance, I really enjoyed Tanner and Andrea’s relationship progression. They’ve had a tentative friendship from the very beginning with an obvious attraction to one another. I’m surprised nothing had happened between them before all this went down. The first half of the story takes place at a cabin that they, along with Kyler and Syd, go to for a vacation. It’s there that their relationship is taken to the next level, as Tanner can’t resist his attraction to Andrea and she decides she might want to give it a try, too. From then on, it’s a real push and pull between these two as their communication skills aren’t the best. I liked that even though there was drama, it wasn’t extreme, which made it more believable. They also had plenty of hot moments, in true JLA fashion, and I was a total sucker for Tanner.

Scorched had all the elements that I’ve come to love and expect from a JLA book, but her writing was also taken to another level with the issues she addressed. She tackles so many – from alcoholism to mental illness to addiction and more. All of that was mixed together well to paint a raw picture of what Andrea is going through and making sure the reader grasps the significance and importance of it all. She makes a point that it’s okay to be who you are and that whoever that is, it’s normal. This book demands to be read and I’m so happy Jen wrote it.

Cover Reveal: Oblivion (Lux Series) - Daemon Black's POV

9:00 AM Vi Win Win 0 Comments

Have you seen it?!?!

Hypable revealed the cover of Oblivion yesterday.

Glorious, isn't it?

Check out the synopsis:

I knew the moment Katy Swartz moved in next door, there was going to be trouble. Lots of it.

And trouble’s the last thing I need, since I’m not exactly from around here. My people arrived on Earth from Lux, a planet thirteen billion light years away. Plus, if there’s one thing I know, it’s that humans can’t be trusted. We scare them. We can do things they only dream about, and honestly, we make them look weak as hell. ‘Cuz they are.

But Kat is getting to me in ways no one else has, and I can’t stop myself from wanting her—or wanting to use my powers to protect her. She makes me weak, and I’m the strongest of our kind, tasked with protecting us all. So this one simple girl…she can mean the end for us. Because the Luxen have an even bigger enemy—the Arum, and I need to stay on my game.

Falling for Katy—a human—won’t just place her in danger. It could get us all killed, and that’s one thing I’ll never let happen…

Jen also had this to say:

Oblivion is a massive book, coming in over 1300 pages which made putting the book in print very difficult and not very cost friendly to the readers, but Entangled Teen and I knew that some of you would want Oblivion in print, a copy that you can hold in your hands. So Oblivion will be available in print for those who wish to have a physical copy. The print copy will be Obsidian told in Daemon’s POV, and the digital version will include Obsidian, plus two bonus books (Onyx and Opal) in Daemon’s POV. The Print version will be available at online retailers and is mainly in place for those who want a print copy. The digital book includes all three stories. If you do end up purchasing both versions, you’ll be paying roughly $17-$18 combined for what basically is three books.

Be sure to pre-order it now and add it to your Goodreads shelf.

I am so excited to dive back into this world and see it through the eyes and mind of Daemon Black.

Deity Island Has Been Re-Vamped

11:59 PM Vi Win Win 2 Comments

I know it's been FOREVER and a day since I've done anything substantial here at Deity Island, besides the read-along, and even that was bare minimum because I was dealing with stuff. I've been a terrible blogger and JLA addict, that's for sure.

Well, it's all changed now. I have renewed motivation and vigor for this fansite and for my passion and love of all things JLA. I really want this fansite to take off and become the leading source for JLA fans.

I really got sick of looking at all that black. It was just too gloomy for me. I needed something more minimal and refreshing. I really like the look of things now. It's more modern and even a bit professional, in my opinion. I love that it has the social media icons built in already and everything just looks sleek and concise.

What do you think?

I slimmed down the sidebar and updated the Poll of the Month and the Quote of the Month. I'm going to try to stay on top of that as I really liked those features. There's also a footer now featuring some Popular Posts and a nifty little Contact Form in case you have any questions.

I was in a "mail client" mood today and joined the Mail Chimp club. All of my previous email subscribers have now been transitioned to the Deity Island Newsletter, but don't worry, I'm not one to s p a m you with a ton of posts. If you're new here, I'd love it if you signed up!

Some other major things to note is I updated the Books and Important Links sections. All of Jen's current books are there for your perusal. I also updated Jen's 2015 Appearances List. I added a tab for all my past read-alongs for reference and I'll be adding a sub-tab to that for current/active read-alongs as I host them.

I'm still debating on whether or not I wanna change the header/logo. I love it and it fits with the name and my fave series, of course, but it might be time for something different. I'm not sure yet. We'll see. For now I just scaled it back a bit because it was just TOO BIG for my liking.

Anyways, I'm going to try my best to stay on top of news and JLA things for you guys. I can tell there's going to non-stop news coming soon.

Thank you to everyone who has stuck by me and Deity Island since the beginning, old or new.  Love you all!
