Book Review: Oblivion by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Experience the epic love story of OBSIDIAN as told by its hero, Daemon Black…
I knew the moment Katy Swartz moved in next door, there was going to be trouble. Lots of it.
And trouble’s the last thing I need, since I’m not exactly from around here. My people arrived on Earth from Lux, a planet thirteen billion light years away. Plus, if there’s one thing I know, it’s that humans can’t be trusted. We scare them. We can do things they only dream about, and honestly, we make them look weak as hell. ‘Cuz they are.
But Kat is getting to me in ways no one else has, and I can't stop myself from wanting her—or wanting to use my powers to protect her. She makes me weak, and I’m the strongest of our kind, tasked with protecting us all. So this one simple girl…she can mean the end for us. Because the Luxen have an even bigger enemy—the Arum, and I need to stay on my game.
Falling for Katy—a human—won't just place her in danger. It could get us all killed, and that’s one thing I’ll never let happen...
I’ve SO been waiting quite awhile to see the story between him and Katy unfold through his eyes. Oblivion was every bit as comical, sweet, rage-inducing, and heart-warming as any Lux fan would come to expect from someone like Daemon Black. I loved every minute of being inside Daemon’s head, particularly when it came to Katy. It was fascinating seeing how fascinated he was with Katy, even though he didn’t want to be. The connection between them was obvious right from the get-go and I loved seeing small moments that we didn’t get to see from Katy’s POV. With this book, it was the little things that stood out the most to me and made me appreciate Daemon more, even in his jerkiest of times.
I had two issues with the book, the first being that it dragged on a bit for a little over half of the book. Too many times Daemon would reiterate the issue with Dawson and how obsessed he was with protecting Dee. Yes, that is very important and explains Daemon’s drive, but a mention once or twice would be plenty for me. This may have something to do with the fact that I read the actual series, so I know what’s going on, but it has been quite awhile since I read Obsidian, so I thought I’d be more enthralled by the book when instead I was wondering when something would happen, despite knowing how it would all go down. Also, it wasn’t as different a read as I was hoping for. JLA has done a retelling of a book in a different POV before and it turned out great! It truly felt like a different kind of story. This time, although I loved those special moments unseen by Katy’s eyes, the book itself wasn’t too far off from Obsidian.
In any case, I loved being inside Daemon’s head. He is one of those guys you can’t help but love, even when you hate him. I read the print version of the book, which only recounts Obsidian from Daemon’s POV. I hope to get my hands on the digital version so I can read Onyx and Opal from his POV one day.
