Book Review: Scorched by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Sometimes life leaves a mark…

Most days, Andrea doesn’t know whether she wants to kiss Tanner or punch him in the gut. He is seriously hot, with legit bedroom eyes and that firefighter body of his, but he’s a major player, and they can’t get along for more than a handful of minutes. Until now.

Tanner knows he and Andrea have had an epic love/hate relationship for as long as he can remember, but he wants more love than hate from her. He wants her. Now. Tomorrow. But the more he gets to know her, the more it becomes obvious that Andrea has a problem. She’s teetering on the edge and every time he tries to catch her, she slips through his fingers.

Andrea’s life is spiraling out of control, and it doesn’t matter that Tanner wants to save her, because when everything falls apart and she’s speeding toward rock bottom, only she can save herself.

Sometimes life makes you work for that happily ever after…

Goodreads | Amazon

I’d have to say that Scorched is one of the most realistic and poignant books that Jen has written to date. Andrea’s story is something that I know a lot of readers will be able to relate to, either fully or in one way or another. The book itself isn’t filled with a dramatic roller coaster, but rather an inner roller coaster of thoughts and emotions. It’s through Andrea’s relationship with Tanner, her being able to open up to the possibility of love, that she comes to terms with her issues and decides whether or not she’s going to take control or let it continue to control her. Andrea is such a strong character and handled her situation in a very admirable way.

As for the romance, I really enjoyed Tanner and Andrea’s relationship progression. They’ve had a tentative friendship from the very beginning with an obvious attraction to one another. I’m surprised nothing had happened between them before all this went down. The first half of the story takes place at a cabin that they, along with Kyler and Syd, go to for a vacation. It’s there that their relationship is taken to the next level, as Tanner can’t resist his attraction to Andrea and she decides she might want to give it a try, too. From then on, it’s a real push and pull between these two as their communication skills aren’t the best. I liked that even though there was drama, it wasn’t extreme, which made it more believable. They also had plenty of hot moments, in true JLA fashion, and I was a total sucker for Tanner.

Scorched had all the elements that I’ve come to love and expect from a JLA book, but her writing was also taken to another level with the issues she addressed. She tackles so many – from alcoholism to mental illness to addiction and more. All of that was mixed together well to paint a raw picture of what Andrea is going through and making sure the reader grasps the significance and importance of it all. She makes a point that it’s okay to be who you are and that whoever that is, it’s normal. This book demands to be read and I’m so happy Jen wrote it.

Cover Reveal: Oblivion (Lux Series) - Daemon Black's POV

Have you seen it?!?!

Hypable revealed the cover of Oblivion yesterday.

Glorious, isn't it?

Check out the synopsis:

I knew the moment Katy Swartz moved in next door, there was going to be trouble. Lots of it.

And trouble’s the last thing I need, since I’m not exactly from around here. My people arrived on Earth from Lux, a planet thirteen billion light years away. Plus, if there’s one thing I know, it’s that humans can’t be trusted. We scare them. We can do things they only dream about, and honestly, we make them look weak as hell. ‘Cuz they are.

But Kat is getting to me in ways no one else has, and I can’t stop myself from wanting her—or wanting to use my powers to protect her. She makes me weak, and I’m the strongest of our kind, tasked with protecting us all. So this one simple girl…she can mean the end for us. Because the Luxen have an even bigger enemy—the Arum, and I need to stay on my game.

Falling for Katy—a human—won’t just place her in danger. It could get us all killed, and that’s one thing I’ll never let happen…

Jen also had this to say:

Oblivion is a massive book, coming in over 1300 pages which made putting the book in print very difficult and not very cost friendly to the readers, but Entangled Teen and I knew that some of you would want Oblivion in print, a copy that you can hold in your hands. So Oblivion will be available in print for those who wish to have a physical copy. The print copy will be Obsidian told in Daemon’s POV, and the digital version will include Obsidian, plus two bonus books (Onyx and Opal) in Daemon’s POV. The Print version will be available at online retailers and is mainly in place for those who want a print copy. The digital book includes all three stories. If you do end up purchasing both versions, you’ll be paying roughly $17-$18 combined for what basically is three books.

Be sure to pre-order it now and add it to your Goodreads shelf.

I am so excited to dive back into this world and see it through the eyes and mind of Daemon Black.

Deity Island Has Been Re-Vamped

I know it's been FOREVER and a day since I've done anything substantial here at Deity Island, besides the read-along, and even that was bare minimum because I was dealing with stuff. I've been a terrible blogger and JLA addict, that's for sure.

Well, it's all changed now. I have renewed motivation and vigor for this fansite and for my passion and love of all things JLA. I really want this fansite to take off and become the leading source for JLA fans.

I really got sick of looking at all that black. It was just too gloomy for me. I needed something more minimal and refreshing. I really like the look of things now. It's more modern and even a bit professional, in my opinion. I love that it has the social media icons built in already and everything just looks sleek and concise.

What do you think?

I slimmed down the sidebar and updated the Poll of the Month and the Quote of the Month. I'm going to try to stay on top of that as I really liked those features. There's also a footer now featuring some Popular Posts and a nifty little Contact Form in case you have any questions.

I was in a "mail client" mood today and joined the Mail Chimp club. All of my previous email subscribers have now been transitioned to the Deity Island Newsletter, but don't worry, I'm not one to s p a m you with a ton of posts. If you're new here, I'd love it if you signed up!

Some other major things to note is I updated the Books and Important Links sections. All of Jen's current books are there for your perusal. I also updated Jen's 2015 Appearances List. I added a tab for all my past read-alongs for reference and I'll be adding a sub-tab to that for current/active read-alongs as I host them.

I'm still debating on whether or not I wanna change the header/logo. I love it and it fits with the name and my fave series, of course, but it might be time for something different. I'm not sure yet. We'll see. For now I just scaled it back a bit because it was just TOO BIG for my liking.

Anyways, I'm going to try my best to stay on top of news and JLA things for you guys. I can tell there's going to non-stop news coming soon.

Thank you to everyone who has stuck by me and Deity Island since the beginning, old or new.  Love you all!

Dark Elements Read-Along Wrap Up

Well, that was quick!

I'm so sad to see that this series is over. Did everyone get a chance to read ELB yet? I hope everyone loved it.

I'm a little disappointed in myself when it came to this read-along because I know I wasn't as involved as I wanted to be. Things just kind of got in the way in my own life and I just couldn't dedicate as much time as I wanted to it. I hope everyone understands. I want to thank everyone who signed up and participated. Whether it was one week, or all 8 weeks, I was happy to have you along for the ride.

Did you all have fun reading or rereading the books? How about those trivia questions? For some reason, I found it harder to come up with the questions this time around. There just wasn't enough "quick and easy" material to work with and I didn't want people spending too much time writing page-long essays, so I tried to find a good balance.

Anyways, we had 48 people sign up, which isn't bad, and about half of those who did manage to keep up with the questions each week, which is great. Now it's time to announce the winners:

- SIGNED copy of Every Last Breath (US & Intl): Bilge & Anna
- SIGNED copy of Scorched (US Only): Jaslyn
- SIGNED copy of Fall With Me (US Only): Brielle
- SIGNED swag packs (US & Intl): Sona & Chelsea
- ebook of Half-Blood: Sharon
- ebook of Forever With You: Fatima

I hope you all enjoyed the read-along and please join in me in all my future read-alongs, because you know Jen will keep pumping out those books! Join the Deity Island Read-Along FB group today!
