My Review of White Hot Kiss by Jennifer L. Armentrout

One kiss could be the last.
Seventeen-year-old Layla just wants to be normal—fit in at school, and go out on a real date with the gorgeous Zayne, whom she's crushed on since forever. Trouble is, Zayne treats Layla like a sister—and Layla is anything but normal. She's half demon, half gargoyle, with abilities no one else possesses.
Raised among the Wardens—a race of gargoyles tasked with hunting demons and keeping humanity safe—Layla tries to fit in, but that means hiding her own dark side from those she loves the most. Especially Zayne, the swoon-worthy, incredibly gorgeous and completely off-limits Warden she's crushed on since forever.
Then she meets Roth—a tattooed, sinfully hot demon who claims to know all her secrets. Layla knows she should stay away, but she's not sure she wants to—especially when that whole no-kissing thing isn't an issue, considering Roth has no soul.
But when Layla discovers she's the reason for the violent demon uprising, trusting Roth could not only ruin her chances with Zayne…it could brand her a traitor to her family. Worse yet, it could become a one-way ticket to the end of the world.

Armentrout delivers a refreshing paranormal tale with a twist. After getting a glimpse of this world in Bitter Sweet Love, I was excited to dive into White Hot Kiss and really see what these creatures were all about. Here, you get a more in-depth look at the dynamics of the Wardens, the threat of demons, and how the human world plays into all of this. I think Jennifer did a great job at introducing readers to this unique and fascinating world of sexy, yet dangerous gargoyles.

Layla definitely has the potential to be one of my favorite female characters from JLA. She starts off very naive and innocent, basically sheltered from the truths and terrors of the real world, and I enjoyed seeing her slowly discover all that has been hidden from her. Despite being basically shunned by the Warden community, she holds her own with these creatures and does her best to prove her worth. She definitely has a lot of inner strength and also, a lot of room for growth. I’m expecting great things from this character.

Now, about the boys.

Roth is in a league all his own. That boy is just plain “bad boy perfection with a heart” on a stick! Jennifer never fails to create those irresistible boy you can’t help but fall for, and boy did I fall for Roth. Not only does he have the looks, he mouth is delectable and he certainly has a way with words. Once again, Jennifer creates engaging dialogue between two captivating characters that just keeps you glued to the pages. I really loved the chemistry and banter between Layla and Roth. He definitely stole my heart with that ending, that’s for sure!

Let’s not forget about Zayne. While he doesn’t get as much “screen time” as Roth, he’s got a bit of “something goin’ on” that intrigued me. There’s obviously feelings brewing between Layla and Zayne, plus a meaningful relationship that they’ve shared since they were young, that I’m just itching to explore. Zayne doesn’t make the best decisions when it comes to Layla, but their situation is pretty complicated and it’s not hard to tell how much he cares for her. I’m hoping for some intense scenes with him in the next book.

With a scorching-hot, yet seemingly complicated romance and one heck of an alluring plot line, White Hot Kiss grabs you and doesn’t let you go. Even worse, it leaves you begging for me! JLA definitely has a hit on her hands and fans of hers will devour this gem. New to JLA? Pick this one up and prepare to be amazed!
